Ayurvedic Perspectives in Chronic Skin Disorders

Chronic skin disorders are among the most common non-communicable diseases worldwide and are often associated with recurrent symptoms, psychological distress, and impaired quality of life. Conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, vitiligo, and chronic urticaria frequently require long-term management, yet conventional therapies may provide incomplete relief or be associated with adverse effects. Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine originating in India, offers a holistic approach to the management of chronic skin diseases by addressing the underlying imbalance of the Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), improving digestion and metabolism (Agni), and eliminating accumulated toxins (Ama). Classical Ayurvedic texts classify most skin disorders under the broad category of Kushtha and emphasize individualized treatment using dietary modifications, lifestyle interventions, herbal formulations, detoxification procedures (Panchakarma), and rejuvenation therapies (Rasayana). Integrating Ayurvedic principles with modern dermatological care may provide complementary strategies for improving symptom control, reducing recurrence, and enhancing patients' overall quality of life.
